Mali is in great need of better healthcare and education. 6-7 million people in rural areas are entirely outside the state-run healthcare system. Infant mortality is high as well as the risk for infectious diseases. Access to midwives locally is therefore life-saving. Please support the training of local midwives through Care for Mali. All your donations go directly to Mali!

MALI NEEDS MORE MIDWIVES

Midwives in Mali help expecting mothers before and during childbirth. They also help in many other ways:

  • Vaccinate and monitor infants during their first 11 months

  • Give information about nutrition, family planning etc.

  • Support and inform victims of genital mutilation in connection with pregnancy and childbirth

  • Inform about the negative effects of genital mutilation

Many rural villages have no access to healthcare at all. This is why training of midwives for work in these areas is so vital.

Our training aims to give additional training to healthcare practitioners already active in rural areas.

FIGHT AGAINST GENITAL MUTILATION

The percentage of women and girls in Mali that have been subjected to FGM is amongst the highest in the world, and is currently around 90%. Most girls are subject to this dangerous practice, especially in rural areas.

We are currently engaged in spreading medical information and hosting discussions about FGM from both religious, social and cultural standpoints with women, men, religious practitioners and circumcisers and hope to achieve good and sustainable results.

Our efforts have started in the cities of Bancoumana and Keniéroba and will move on to other villigas in the course of the programme.

SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN 7-10 YEARS

Currently 90-100 children in the village Bancoumana are without schooling each year. The village’s existing school is too small to room all children in the village and they remain at home or have to work. Despite the UN Goal of schooling for all children, these children remain without the opportunity to learn how to read and write.

AASM/Care for Mali have received a piece of land from the chief of the village to build a school where we have access to water. We also have a teacher for this mission. We just need to find financing to construct the building. The total cost (including benches and chairs) is 210 000 SEK (approximately 20 000 US dollars). Our goal is to start building the school these coming months so they can start school in the end of 2023.

All contributions are very welcome!

Care for Mali is a Swedish charity supporting better healthcare and education in Mali. Our focus is on women and children.

AASM - OUR PARTNER IN MALI

The voluntary organisation AASM (Association Appui Santé Mali) was founded in 2012 by healthcare personnel at the Magené clinic in Bamako. Their purpose is to provide healthcare for the most needy. So far, they have initiated two important projects, both with financial help from Sweden. The first, aimed at elderly people was started in 2013 and offers weekly checkups for, among others, chronic patients. The second has focused on infants and small children. AASM was founded and is currently run by Dr Noumou Kouyaté. He runs three clinics, two in Bamako and one in Bancoumana. The clinics have a great reputation and attract patients from all of Bamako, and even from surrounding countries.
